EV Armenia

EV connector types in Armenia and which cars use them

By EV Armenia team · Updated

Short answer

Armenia has no single plug standard. Cars arrive from the United States (Type 1, CCS1, NACS), China (GB/T, and CCS2 on export models) and Europe or Korea (Type 2, CCS2), so all of them are seen on the road. The EV Armenia network is AC only: 31 Type 1 (J1772), 29 Type 2 and 2 GB/T connectors. Check your car’s inlet before you pick a station.

Which connector does my car have?

  • Look at the car. The charging flap shows the inlet. A round-ish AC inlet with five pins and a latch at the top is Type 1; a larger one with seven pin positions is Type 2 or GB/T. The shape of the flap and a sticker or the manual name the standard.
  • By origin. A car bought at a US auction usually has Type 1 and CCS1 (Teslas: NACS). A car made for China usually has GB/T, and some Chinese export models have CCS2. A car from Europe or Korea usually has Type 2 and CCS2. This is a rule of thumb: confirm on your own car.
  • AC and DC are different sockets. Many cars have one inlet that takes both (the Combo types) and others have two separate ones, such as GB/T AC and GB/T DC.

AC and DC: what the network offers

All 33 EV Armenia charging points in the catalog are AC, with up to 21 kW on a Type 2 connector. For 4 connectors the type is not recorded in the catalog yet. AC charging is slower than DC but costs less and is enough for overnight, hotel or restaurant stops. For DC fast charging use another network; see the comparison of networks and apps.

No source we found gives the share of GB/T cars or GB/T sockets in Armenia, so we do not state one. What is documented is the mix: Open Charge Map lists a Yerevan site with CCS2, GB/T DC and CCS1 connectors at 150 kW each, and Team Energy states in its app listing that it supports GB/T, CCS1, CCS2, Type 1, Type 2 and Tesla connectors.

Cables and adapters

  • For AC charging bring a cable that matches both the station socket and your car’s inlet. If the station has a fixed cable, its page says so.
  • Adapters exist for some pairs (for example NACS to CCS1 for some cars, or GB/T DC to CCS in specific cases) but not for all. Use only adapters approved by the car maker and allowed by the station operator.
  • Never force a plug and never charge through a home extension lead; see charging etiquette and safety.

Find stations that fit: the list of stations shows connector types and kW for every location, and the app can filter the map by connector.

Questions and answers

GB/T or CCS2: which is better in Armenia?

Neither is better in general: use the one your car has. Cars for the Chinese market usually have GB/T, European and Korean cars CCS2. Public DC networks differ in what they offer, so check the operator’s app.

Can a Type 1 car charge at a Type 2 station?

Not with a plain Type 2 cable. You need a cable or adapter with a Type 1 end that is approved for your car. EV Armenia has 31 Type 1 connectors as well as 29 Type 2.

Does Armenia use CHAdeMO?

Yes, to a limited extent: PlugShare lists 10 CHAdeMO points in Yerevan (user-submitted data). The EV Armenia network has none.

Where can a Tesla charge?

See charging a Tesla in Armenia. In short: PlugShare shows no Tesla Supercharger in Yerevan, so a Tesla uses third-party stations with the right connector.
