EV charging station profit and payback in Armenia

By EV Armenia team · Updated

Short answer

The payback of a charging station is the investment divided by the monthly profit, and monthly profit is the energy you sell times your margin per kWh, minus fixed costs. Utilisation, the share of time chargers are in use, matters most. We have no Armenian utilisation, hardware or commercial tariff data, so this page gives the method and a calculator for your own numbers, with clearly marked placeholder values.

Charging station payback calculator

Replace the example numbers with your own: the calculator only does the arithmetic, it does not know your tariff, traffic or costs.

Illustrative arithmetic, not a forecast. The example values are placeholders. Taxes, payment-gateway fees, maintenance, rent of the site and the platform subscription are not included unless you add them to fixed monthly costs.

The model

  1. Energy sold per month = number of charge points x average power delivered (kW) x charging hours per point per day x 30.
  2. Revenue = energy sold x selling price per kWh.
  3. Profit per month = revenue - energy sold x your cost of electricity per kWh - fixed monthly costs (site rent, connectivity, platform, service).
  4. Payback in months = investment / profit per month. If profit is zero or negative there is no payback.

Utilisation decides the result

The table below uses the calculator’s placeholder values: 4 AC points at 7 kW, a selling price of 100 AMD and electricity cost of 60 AMD per kWh, fixed costs of 40,000 AMD per month and an investment of 4,000,000 AMD. Only the charging hours change. These numbers illustrate how sensitive the result is; they are not Armenian data and not a forecast.

Taxes, payment fees, maintenance and the cost of money are not included. Real chargers rarely deliver full rated power for the whole session.

What is known about utilisation

We found no published utilisation figures for Armenia. A 2023 analysis by an Indian industry site, written with a vendor, found that most public stations there ran below 25% utilisation and that the margin per unit needed to break even rose sharply as utilisation fell. That market differs from Armenia, so use it only as a reminder that a low-use station is costly, never as an Armenian forecast.

Inputs to collect before you invest

Numbers to get, and where from
InputWhere to get it
Charger price and installationWritten quotes from several suppliers; see charger cost
Cost of electricityYour commercial tariff and any demand charge from the distribution company. Household rates (44.98 AMD by day, 34.98 at night in 2026) do not apply to a business
Selling priceCompare with the market: EV Armenia charges 100 AMD per kWh on AC; see prices
TrafficCount cars at the site, ask the host, and run a pilot with one charger
Fixed costsSite rent or revenue share, connectivity, platform fee, maintenance
Taxes and receiptsYour accountant; see licence, tax and e-CRM

How to lower the risk

  • Start with one or two chargers at a place where cars already stay for hours: a hotel, a restaurant, a shopping centre.
  • Measure real hours of charging for three months, then decide on more.
  • Prefer AC for long stops and keep DC for sites with real grid capacity and traffic.
  • Use software that shows utilisation per station, so you can learn from your own data. Our platform has live sessions and finance reports.

Questions and answers

How long does it take for an EV charger to pay for itself?

It depends on utilisation, margin and investment. With the calculator’s placeholder inputs it ranges from none to about two years, depending on hours of use. Replace them with your own numbers.

What is a good utilisation rate?

We found no Armenian benchmark. In another market most public stations ran below 25%. Measure your own sites.

Does the calculator include taxes?

No. Taxes, payment fees, maintenance and the cost of financing are not included.
